This temple in Tondai Naadu, received endowments from the Imperial Cholas, as seen from the inscriptions from the period of Raja Raja Chola II.

Saint Agathiyar,on the way to this sthalam rested in a Village called “Perum Peru Kandigai” where Lord Aatcheeswarar gave Dharshan to him on his request.This is also celebrated on 11th day of chittirai Peruvizha.
