Legend says that Lord Vishnu in an attempt to get Chakra from Lordshiva (which had been earlier used to destroy Demon jalantharan) worshipped Shiva at this sthalam using 1000
Lotus flowers a day. One day he found one of the flowers missing,But as to continue pooja,he put his left eye at the feet of Shiva.Hence the name Veezhimizhalai. Lord Shiva
married Kathyayini at this sthalam hence the name kalyana sundarar as well.
